In den 1530er Jahren heuert der deutsche Kaufmannssohn Balthasar Sturmer auf einem christlichen Korsarenschiff an, dass im Mittelmeer Jagd auf osmanische Handelsschiffe macht. Gerade als er plant, Kapitän seines eigenen Piratenunternehmens zu werden, gerät er jedoch selber in die Hände osmanischer Korsaren und wird als Sklave nach Nordafrika verkauft.
Im Sommer 2019 machen der Meeresarchäologe Timmy Gambin und sein Team von der Universität Malta eine sensationelle Entdeckung: Ein Tauchroboter liefert Bilder aus 126 m Tiefe und enthüllt die Umrisse eines Schiffswracks, das Wissenschaftler auf das 16. Jahrhundert datieren. Auf so einem Schiff könnte auch Balthasar vor hunderten Jahren am Mittelmeer gefahren sein. Im Sommer 2023 startete schließlich eine spektakuläre Unterwasser-Expedition hinab zu den Überresten des Wracks, um es erstmals zu erforschen.
Der Film entwirrt ein weitgehend unbekanntes Stück europäischer Geschichte: Piraterie und Sklaverei im Mittelmeer-gesetzlich geregelter Menschenhandel als Instrument der Machtgewinnung und der persönlichen Bereicherung.
In the 1530s, the German merchant's son Balthasar Sturmer signs on to a Christian corsair ship that hunts Ottoman merchant ships in the Mediterranean. However, just as he is planning to become the captain of his own pirate company, he himself falls into the hands of Ottoman corsairs and is sold as a slave to North Africa.
In the summer of 2019, marine archaeologist Timmy Gambin and his team from the University of Malta make a sensational discovery: a diving robot delivers images from a depth of 126 meters and reveals the outline of a shipwreck that scientists date back to the 16th century. Balthasar could have sailed the Mediterranean on a ship just like this hundreds of years ago. In the summer of 2023, a spectacular underwater expedition finally set off to explore the remains of the wreck for the first time.
The film unravels a largely unknown piece of European history: piracy and slavery in the Mediterranean - legally regulated human trafficking as an instrument for gaining power and personal enrichment.
